Drivers FAQs

What is the commitment Level? - Orange Bag pickups begin promptly at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday mornings. You’ll receive a designated route that concludes at a nearby sorting site, and most volunteers complete their route within 90–120 minutes. After you sign up for an Orange Bag Day, we’ll email you the training materials you need. These events take place once a month during the school year, always on Saturdays. There’s no long‑term commitment—before each event, we’ll send a text to confirm your availability.

What if I’m not available on one of the Orange Bag Saturdays? - No worries — we have additional drivers ready to step in whenever someone isn’t available.

What happens when I get to the sorting site? - A team of volunteers will unload your vehicle while you check in with the Driver Coordinator. Please return your scale, door hangers, and any unused Orange Bags at that time.

What do I need to be a successful Driver? - Drivers should have a mobile phone capable of receiving text messages and downloading the routing app. Your vehicle also needs to be large enough to hold 20–25 full Orange Bags.

We also suggest bringing one or two helpers to assist with collecting, weighing, and recording donations in the app. Many volunteers participate as families, with one adult driving while other family members help as the team.

How do I know what application to download onto my phone? - We’ll provide you with our driver training materials along with instructions to review before the event.

Can I volunteer to drive and sign up to sort on the same Orange Bag Event Day? - No, these two things are happening simultaneously.

What if I’m not receiving the Driver Texts surveys after I’ve signed up? - Driver availability surveys are sent approximately 21 days before each event, followed by training materials about 10 days prior. If you haven’t been receiving these messages, please check your text app to make sure you received our initial message and replied “Yes” to allow us to contact you by text.

Only volunteers who have agreed to our driver waiver policy are eligible to participate as drivers. This waiver is included in the initial volunteer registration and is renewed each August.

This sounds like something I can do!  How do I sign up? - If you’re interested in becoming a driver, please complete the volunteer form and select Volunteer Driver. We’ll add you to our driver list and reach out as the next event approaches.

What if I can no longer participate? - If you need to update your contact information or make changes to your volunteer status, please reach out to us.
