Building Regional Community Resource Hubs Across West Virginia
As UCEMSRT continues to expand its impact across West Virginia, we are developing a statewide network of Regional Community Resource Hubs designed to increase access to essential services and resources for children, families, and partner organizations.
To accomplish this goal, UCEMSRT is actively working with public school superintendents and county leaders throughout the state to identify permanently closed or underutilized school facilities that can be repurposed into regional distribution and service centers. These facilities offer a unique opportunity to transform vacant community assets into centers of hope, support, and opportunity.
West Virginia has been divided into six service regions, with each region ultimately housing a dedicated UCEMSRT Regional Hub. These hubs will serve as centralized locations for receiving, storing, and distributing food, clothing, shoes, hygiene products, school supplies, emergency assistance items, and other critical resources. They will also provide logistical support to schools, faith-based organizations, nonprofits, and community groups serving vulnerable populations throughout their respective regions.
A major component of this initiative is expanding our food distribution capabilities. Due to limited storage space and the absence of commercial refrigeration and freezer capacity, UCEMSRT has been forced to decline significant quantities of donated food, including portions of tractor-trailer shipments that could have benefited thousands of families. By securing dedicated facilities, we will be able to install the necessary cold storage infrastructure required to accept and distribute USDA commodities, fresh produce, dairy products, frozen foods, and other perishable items to communities in need.
Our long-term vision is to establish six fully operational Regional Community Resource Hubs strategically located throughout West Virginia:
Region 1
Brooke, Doddridge, Hancock, Marshall, Monongalia, Ohio, Pleasants, Preston, Ritchie, Tyler, and Wetzel Counties
Region 2
Cabell, Jackson, Lincoln, Mason, Mingo, Putnam, Wayne, and Wood Counties
Region 3
Boone, Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, Kanawha, Logan, Nicholas, Roane, and Wirt Counties
Region 4
Barbour, Gilmer, Harrison, Lewis, Marion, Randolph, Taylor, Upshur, and Webster Counties
Region 5
Fayette, Greenbrier, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Pocahontas, Raleigh, Summers, and Wyoming Counties
Region 6
Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, Mineral, Morgan, Pendleton, and Tucker Counties
We are pleased to announce that discussions are currently underway with school leadership in Region 3 regarding the acquisition and redevelopment of a former school facility. If finalized, this location would become the first official UCEMSRT Regional Community Resource Hub and serve as a model for future hubs across the state. Our goal is to complete this project by July 2026 and begin expanding services shortly thereafter.
By creating these Regional Community Resource Hubs, UCEMSRT will dramatically increase its ability to respond to community needs, reduce waste, strengthen local partnerships, and ensure that essential resources reach the individuals and families who need them most.
Together, we are transforming unused spaces into places of purpose—building a stronger, healthier, and more resilient West Virginia for generations to come.
